Microperforated metallic wrapping by Renzo Piano [542]

Renzo Piano has built this amazing organic shaped building between party walls in Paris. He has adopted a continuous outer wrapping as a unique solution to this very complex geometry.

The envelope is formed by apparently fixed slats, of microperforated aluminium sheets. The skin of louvers surrounds the glass dome on the top floors of the building, forming a solar protection, perhaps too much densely perforated for very sunny days.

Compelled by the desire of continuous wrapping, the constructive solution of microperforated louvers is brought to the whole building. Its role in most of the surface seems to be reduced to achieve this epidermal continuity.
