A beautiful but underused gate [558]

Filt3rs has frequently praised protections that pivot on its upper axis projecting as visors. Their advantage is that they open views to the outside while still providing an effective solar protection.

This could be the case of this Australian housing whose wide openings are closed with a metal mesh operated by hydraulic telescopic bars. However this protective effect is practically nullified by the design of the grille. It is a mesh with flat vertical metallic profiles and horizontal round bars. The front view is nice, with its vertical strips, but its protective effect is negligible under a front solar radiation. This lack of protection is the same whatever the position of the panel is, vertical or overhung.

The solution may be justified by a role that the grating can surely fulfil as a security element against intrusion (burglary). It's a pity because a grate with slightly inclined horizontal strips had also met this safety function.
